Green shipping

Zero Emission Services (ZES) operates the first Dutch inland vessel, the Alphenaar, to use interchangeable energy containers for propulsion. The Alphenaar sails between Alphen aan den Rijn and Moerdijk transporting beer for HEINEKEN.

Innovative transport system
ZES offers a new type of transport system to make inland shipping more sustainable: a complete product and services packager for emission-free sailing based on exchangeable battery containers (ZESpacks) with green electricity, charging station, technical support an innovative payment concept for barge owners. The new system is clean, climate neutral and ready to face the competition with fossil fuels.

Upscaling
ZES’s ambition is to scale up in the short term to eight vessels, eight loading stations and fourteen ZESpacks. The company aims to realize 30 zero-emission shipping routes by 2030, which can save up to 360,000 tonnes of CO2 and 2,800 tonnes of NOx. With operations up and running, ZES will start gaining user experience to achieve completely emission-free shipping as soon as possible.
